Kelly Raulerson started Plain Talk Insurance for a simple reason: insurance is confusing, and most of what’s written about it makes it worse.
Kelly has spent more than ten years taking complicated subjects and explaining them so real people can use them. She built A Girl Worth Saving into a site read by about a million people a year, wrote the cookbook Paleo Eats, and did media work with national brands like Johnsonville along the way. She sold the site in 2025. Longtime readers may know her as Kelly Bejelly.
She is also a builder of businesses. Kelly co-founded the meal planning software company 20 Dishes and served as its COO through its sale in 2020. She is co-founder and COO of Sip Herbals, an herbal coffee alternative brand, and has co-owned a payment processing company since 2018. Earlier in her career she spent several years in consultative sales, helping homeowners and architects make big, expensive decisions with confidence. She has spoken at a WordPress conference and works as an SEO strategist, which is a fancy way of saying she studies what people actually ask and makes sure they get a straight answer.
As Seen and Heard
Kelly has been quoted in Fast Company and is a co-founder of Sip Herbals, a brand featured in Forbes and on ABC’s Shark Tank. As Kelly Bejelly, she has been a guest on the Healthpreneur Podcast and Real Food Liz Radio, co-hosted the Listen Up Paleo Podcast, and spoken at Press Publish Portland.
That’s what Plain Talk Insurance is for. Every guide on this site is researched against primary sources like Medicare.gov, CMS, and the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation, then written the way you’d explain it to a friend at the kitchen table.
Kelly lives in the Portland, Oregon area with her husband and two kids. She is currently completing her Oregon life and health insurance license.
