THE BASICS

How Final Expense Insurance Works

Final expense is a type of whole life insurance with a smaller death benefit. When you die, the money goes to your beneficiary, who can use it for anything: the funeral, medical bills, credit cards, or simply getting by.

The main types:

TypeHealth questions?Good to know
Simplified issueYes, a short list. No medical examUsually lower price, and full coverage from day one if approved
Guaranteed issueNoAnyone in the eligible age range can get it, but it costs more and usually has a waiting period
READ THIS PART

What's a Waiting Period?

Many guaranteed issue policies, and some others, pay a limited benefit if you die from natural causes during the first part of the policy, often the first two years. Usually that means a refund of premiums paid, sometimes plus interest. After the waiting period, the full benefit pays. Accidental death is often covered in full from the start. Always read this part of the policy before you buy.
