Providence Medicare Advantage Is Ending: What to Do for 2027
Written by Kelly Raulerson · Last updated FacebookEmail
Key Takeaways
- ✓Your plan ends December 31, 2026. Providence hospitals and clinics stay open. Only the insurance plan is going away.
- ✓December 7 is the date to circle. Choose by then and your new coverage starts January 1.
- ✓Don’t assume a new plan includes Providence. UnitedHealthcare says Providence is out of its Medicare Advantage network starting January 1, 2027. As of September 1, 2026, Providence’s own list for its Portland-area clinics shows two continuing Medicare Advantage options: Devoted Health HMO plans, and Regence PPO plans at three clinics.
- ✓You can buy a Medicare Supplement without health questions. Losing your plan this way gives you guaranteed issue rights for a limited time.
- ✓Doing nothing has a cost. Medicare moves you to Original Medicare. Unless you get Extra Help, you won’t have a drug plan until you join one.
What Happened to Providence Medicare Advantage?
Providence Health Plan is closing its Medicare Advantage plans at the end of 2026. Here’s how it unfolded:
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 20, 2026 | Providence announced it would leave most of its health insurance business starting in 2027. For Medicare Advantage, it said it was working on an agreement with a national insurer so members could keep their coverage. |
| August 13, 2026 | Providence said those talks had failed and its Medicare Advantage plans would close at the end of the year. It never named the insurer. |
| December 31, 2026 | The last day of Providence Medicare Advantage coverage. |
About 64,000 people had a Providence Medicare Advantage plan when the news broke. In Oregon, the plans were sold in Clackamas, Hood River, Lane, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill counties.
Should You Have Gotten a Letter?
Yes. Federal rules require a plan that isn’t renewing to mail each member a written notice at least 90 days before coverage ends. For a December 31 end date, that works out to October 2, 2026.
If yours hasn’t shown up, call the number on your Providence member card. And when it arrives, keep it. You may need it to prove your coverage ended if you apply for a Medicare Supplement.
Your Deadlines
You have two chances to choose new coverage. The first one is the one you want.
| Date | What it means |
|---|---|
| October 15 to December 7, 2026 | Medicare Open Enrollment. Choose a plan now and it starts January 1, 2027, with no gap. |
| December 8 to December 31, 2026 | Your special window opens because your plan isn’t renewing. Choose in this stretch and coverage still starts January 1. |
| December 31, 2026 | Your Providence Medicare Advantage plan ends. |
| January 1, 2027 | If you haven’t chosen, Medicare moves you to Original Medicare. |
| January 2027 | Choose in January and the new plan starts February 1. |
| February 1 to 28, 2027 | Last month of the special window. Choose in February and the new plan starts March 1. |
| March 4, 2027 | Last day to apply for a Medicare Supplement with guaranteed issue rights (63 days after your coverage ends). |

Which 2027 Plans Include Providence Doctors?
Fewer than you’d hope, so check before you choose. A plan being sold in your county doesn’t mean Providence is in its network.
Here’s what has been published so far for the eight insurers selling Medicare Advantage in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties:
| Insurer | What’s published about Providence for 2027 | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| Devoted Health | Providence says it is contracted with Devoted Health in Oregon. Its Portland and Yamhill clinic list shows Devoted HMO plans accepted, but not Devoted PPO plans. | Providence |
| Regence | Regence Medicare Advantage PPO plans are accepted at three Providence Medical Group clinics only: Canby, Molalla, and Wilsonville. | Providence |
| UnitedHealthcare | Out of network starting January 1, 2027. This covers individual Medicare Advantage plans, group retiree plans, and chronic special needs plans in Oregon and Washington. | UnitedHealthcare |
| Aetna, ATRIO, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, Wellcare | Not on Providence’s Portland and Yamhill list of accepted Medicare Advantage plans. | Providence |
Providence’s list is dated September 1, 2026. UnitedHealthcare’s notice was updated October 5, 2026.
Four things to know before you lean on that table:
- ✓It’s a clinic list. Providence’s list covers Providence Medical Group clinics. It doesn’t spell out hospital coverage, so ask the plan about your hospital too.
- ✓It can change. Providence says more contracts are still being finalized, and it tells patients to confirm coverage with the insurer.
- ✓It’s regional. Providence keeps separate lists for Hood River, the North Coast, and Southern Oregon.
- ✓Original Medicare is on the list. Providence accepts Original Medicare (Parts A and B), which matters if you’re weighing a Medicare Supplement.
Devoted Health's 2027 HMO plans in the Portland area
These are the Devoted HMO plans in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties for 2027. All four include drug coverage.
| Plan | Monthly premium | In-network out-of-pocket max |
|---|---|---|
| Devoted Core 001 OR (HMO) | $0 | $6,700 |
| Devoted Giveback 028 OR (HMO) | $0 | $8,900 |
| Devoted Giveback Extras 025 OR (HMO) | $0 | $7,700 |
| Devoted Premium 005 OR (HMO) | $43 | $5,900 |
Source: CMS 2027 Medicare Advantage Landscape file. You still pay your Part B premium. Devoted also sells one PPO plan here, Devoted Choice Premium 002 OR, which Providence’s list does not show as accepted.
What UnitedHealthcare members should know
UnitedHealthcare lists eight Oregon hospitals affected, including Providence Portland Medical Center, Providence St. Vincent, Providence Milwaukie, Providence Willamette Falls, Providence Newberg, and Providence Hood River. Two exceptions are worth knowing:
- ✓Ongoing treatment. If you’re in active treatment for a serious or complex condition, UnitedHealthcare says you may be able to keep seeing your Providence provider at in-network cost for a period of time. Call the number on your ID card to apply.
- ✓Emergencies. Go to the nearest hospital. UnitedHealthcare says emergency care is covered at the in-network level even at an out-of-network hospital.
UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare Supplement plans aren’t affected.
How to check your own doctors
- 1
Write down every doctor, clinic, and hospital you want to keep.
- 2
Look each one up in the plan’s 2027 provider directory. Networks reset every year, so a 2026 directory won’t help you.
- 3
Call the doctor’s office and ask. Say the exact plan name, including HMO or PPO. That detail decides the answer.
- 4
Compare with Original Medicare. It works with any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare, with no network.
Providence also has a page for patients sorting this out: providence.org/keepmydoctor.
Your Two Options
Every Providence member lands in one of two places for 2027. Neither is wrong. They just trade different things.
| Another Medicare Advantage plan | Original Medicare + Supplement + Part D | |
|---|---|---|
| Doctors | The new plan’s network. Check it for Providence. | Any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare |
| Monthly cost | Your Part B premium plus the plan premium, which can be $0 | Your Part B premium plus a Supplement premium and a Part D premium |
| Cost when you get care | Copays as you go, up to the plan’s yearly out-of-pocket max | Depends on the Supplement plan you pick |
| Drug coverage | Built into most plans | A separate Part D plan |
| Health questions to get in? | No | No, if you apply during your guaranteed issue window |
Option 1: Another Medicare Advantage plan. If you liked one card that covers everything, this is the closest swap. Start with the network question above, then compare costs. See Medicare Advantage plans in Oregon.
Option 2: Original Medicare with a Supplement and Part D. There’s no network to worry about, so your Providence doctors stay in reach. A Medicare Supplement helps pay what Original Medicare doesn’t, and a Part D plan covers prescriptions.

Your 2027 Choices by County
Here’s what’s on the shelf in the six Oregon counties where Providence sold Medicare Advantage plans in 2026.
| County | Plans for 2027 | Insurers | Plans with drug coverage | $0 premium plans with drug coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multnomah | 32 | 8 | 25 | 12 |
| Washington | 32 | 8 | 25 | 12 |
| Clackamas | 32 | 8 | 25 | 12 |
| Yamhill | 27 | 7 | 22 | 9 |
| Lane | 26 | 7 | 21 | 10 |
| Hood River | 14 | 4 | 11 | 6 |
Source: CMS 2027 Medicare Advantage Landscape file, data updated September 22, 2026. Counts are plans open to anyone with Medicare. Special needs plans and employer plans aren’t included.
Notice the gap between the second and fourth columns? Some plans don’t include drug coverage at all. Those only make sense if you already have drug coverage somewhere else, such as through the VA. Check for a drug benefit before you enroll.

Buying a Medicare Supplement Without Health Questions
Yes, you can, and this is the part of the Providence news that works in your favor.
Because your Medicare Advantage plan is leaving Medicare, you have what’s called a guaranteed issue right. During that window, an insurer selling Medicare Supplement plans can’t turn you down, charge you more because of your health, or exclude a preexisting condition.
| What to know | The details |
|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Providence Medicare Advantage members who switch to Original Medicare |
| Which plans | In Oregon: Plans A, B, C, D, F (including high-deductible F), G, K, L, M, and N, from any insurer selling them here |
| When the window opens | Under federal rules, 60 days before your coverage ends, which is November 1, 2026. Oregon’s rule opens it earlier, on the day you get your termination notice. |
| When it closes | 63 days after your coverage ends, which is March 4, 2027 |
| What to send | Proof of the date your Providence coverage ends. That’s your letter. |
Three details that trip people up:
- ✓Your Supplement can’t start until your Providence plan ends. Apply in the fall so it begins January 1 and you never have a gap.
- ✓Plans C and F aren’t open to everyone. Whether you can buy them depends on when you first became eligible for Medicare.
- ✓A Supplement doesn’t cover prescriptions. You’ll need a Part D plan with it.
What Happens to Your Prescriptions?
It depends on which path you take, and this is where people get caught.
| Your situation | Your drug coverage on January 1 |
|---|---|
| You join a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage | Included in the new plan |
| You choose Original Medicare and join a Part D plan by December 31 | Starts with the Part D plan |
| You do nothing and you get Extra Help | Medicare assigns you to a standalone drug plan |
| You do nothing and you don’t get Extra Help | None, until you join a Part D plan |
Going without has a second cost. If you go 63 days or more without drug coverage that’s as good as Medicare’s, you can owe a late enrollment penalty. It’s 1% of a national base premium for each month you went without, and it stays on your premium for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage.
Oregon has eight standalone Part D plans for 2027. Compare them on Part D plans in Oregon.
If You Have Medicare and the Oregon Health Plan
If you’re a Health Share of Oregon member with both OHP and a Providence Medicare Advantage plan, your path is different. Health Share says your Medicare Advantage plan will change to CareOregon Advantage Plus in 2027. CareOregon says the change is automatic.
Would you rather pick a different plan? You can, during Open Enrollment from October 15 to December 7, 2026. Health Share Customer Service is at 503-416-8090.
Before you settle in, ask CareOregon whether your current doctors are in its network. Here’s more on Medicare in Oregon and the Medicare Savings Program.
If You Have a Providence Medicare Supplement
A Medicare Supplement is a different product from Medicare Advantage, and the news is different too. Providence says it’s no longer taking new Medicare Supplement enrollments. For current members, it says coverage remains in effect at this time and that members will get individual notice well ahead of any changes for 2027.
So if you have a Providence Supplement, nothing on this page changes your coverage today. Watch your mail.

FAQs
What should I do about Providence Medicare Advantage ending, and what's the deadline?
Choose new coverage by December 7, 2026, so it starts January 1, 2027. Your choices are another Medicare Advantage plan, or Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement and a Part D plan. A backup window runs from December 8 through February 28, 2027.
Should I have gotten a letter from Providence by now?
Yes. Federal rules require a written notice at least 90 days before coverage ends, which works out to October 2, 2026. If you don't have yours, call the number on your Providence member card. Keep the letter when it comes.
Which Medicare Advantage plans take Providence doctors in 2027?
As of September 1, 2026, Providence's Portland and Yamhill clinic list shows Devoted Health HMO plans, plus Regence PPO plans at its Canby, Molalla, and Wilsonville clinics. Providence says more contracts are being finalized, so confirm with the plan and your doctor's office before you enroll.
Will UnitedHealthcare cover Providence in 2027?
Not on its Medicare Advantage plans. UnitedHealthcare says Providence hospitals and providers in Oregon and Washington are out of network starting January 1, 2027, for individual Medicare Advantage, group retiree, and chronic special needs plans. Its Medicare Supplement plans aren't affected.
Can I switch back to Original Medicare?
Yes. You can choose it during Open Enrollment, and it's also where Medicare puts you on January 1 if you don't pick a plan. Original Medicare alone has no drug coverage, so most people add a Part D plan and a Medicare Supplement.
Can I get a Medicare Supplement with a preexisting condition?
Yes, during your guaranteed issue window. Because your plan is ending, insurers can't turn you down or charge you more for your health on the eligible plans. Under federal rules, the window runs from November 1, 2026 through March 4, 2027. Oregon's rule opens it when you get your termination notice.
What happens if I don't pick a new plan?
Medicare moves you to Original Medicare on January 1, 2027. If you get Extra Help, Medicare assigns you to a drug plan. If you don't, you'll have no drug coverage until you join a Part D plan.
Will I pay a penalty if I go without a drug plan?
You can, if you go 63 days or more without drug coverage that's as good as Medicare's. The penalty is 1% of a national base premium for each month without coverage, and it lasts as long as you have Medicare drug coverage.
Is Providence ending its Medicare Supplement plans too?
Providence hasn't said that. It has stopped taking new Medicare Supplement enrollments, says current coverage remains in effect at this time, and says members will get individual notice well ahead of any 2027 changes.
Are Providence hospitals and clinics closing?
No. The hospitals and clinics are a separate organization from the health plan, and Providence says they'll keep providing care. What changes is which insurance they accept.
I have Medicare and the Oregon Health Plan. What happens to me?
If you're a Health Share of Oregon member, Health Share says your Medicare Advantage plan will change to CareOregon Advantage Plus in 2027. You can choose a different plan from October 15 to December 7, 2026.
