Who Each One Usually Fits

Medicare Advantage usually fits if

You want a low monthly premium. You’re comfortable using a network. You like extras like dental, vision, or hearing. You mostly get care close to home. See Medicare Advantage plans in Oregon.

A Supplement usually fits if

You want predictable costs when you get care. You want to keep specific doctors or specialists, wherever they are. You travel or split time between states. You’d rather pay more each month than face big copays later. See Medicare Supplement plans in Oregon.

The Switching Rule Most People Learn Too Late

This is the most important part of the decision. You can usually switch from a Supplement to Medicare Advantage during Open Enrollment. Going the other way is harder.

  • Your best shot at a Supplement is your one-time 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older. No health questions.
  • After that, insurers can ask health questions and turn you down, unless you have a guaranteed issue right.
  • One protection for new enrollees: if you join Medicare Advantage when you’re first eligible at 65 and change your mind within the first year, you have a guaranteed issue right to switch to Original Medicare and buy a Supplement.
  • Already on a Supplement in Oregon? The Oregon birthday rule lets you switch to another Supplement with the same or fewer benefits around your birthday each year.
COST

Is Medicare Advantage or a Supplement Cheaper?

It depends on how much care you use. In a healthy year, Medicare Advantage often costs less because the premium is low. In a year with surgery or a hospital stay, a Supplement often costs less because it pays most of what Original Medicare doesn’t. The question is which risk you’d rather carry.

QUESTIONS

FAQs

Which is better, Medicare Advantage or a Supplement?

Neither is better for everyone. Advantage usually wins on monthly cost and extras. A Supplement usually wins on predictable costs and doctor choice.

Can I switch from Medicare Advantage to a Supplement?

You can apply, but outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed issue right, insurers can ask health questions and decline you.

Can I have both Medicare Advantage and a Supplement?

No. Supplements only work with Original Medicare.

Do Supplements include drug coverage?

No. You'll need a separate Part D plan.
