How Does a Medicare Supplement Work?
Original Medicare pays a big share of your health care costs, but not all of it, and it has no yearly cap on what you pay. A Medicare Supplement fills in those gaps. Here’s what Original Medicare leaves you paying in 2026:
| Cost | 2026 amount |
|---|---|
| Part A hospital deductible | $1,736 per benefit period |
| Part B yearly deductible | $283 |
| Part B coinsurance | Usually 20% of the cost, with no yearly limit |
| Hospital stay, days 61 to 90 | $434 a day |
| Skilled nursing, days 21 to 100 | $217 a day |
A few more things to know
You need Original Medicare.
A Supplement works with Parts A and B, not with Medicare Advantage.
No network.
You can see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare.
Drugs aren't included.
You’ll want a separate Part D drug plan.
Comparing Medigap Plans
Medigap plans are standardized and named with letters. A Plan G covers the same benefits no matter which insurance company sells it. What changes is the price and the company’s service.
| Plan | What it covers | What you still pay |
|---|---|---|
| Plan G | Everything in the chart above except the Part B deductible | The $283 Part B deductible (2026) |
| Plan N | Most gaps, including the Part A deductible and Part B coinsurance | The Part B deductible, up to $20 for some office visits, up to $50 for ER visits if you aren’t admitted, and Part B excess charges |
| High-deductible Plan G | The same as Plan G after you meet a deductible | Up to $2,950 in 2026 before the plan pays |
| Plan K | 50% of most gaps | Your share, up to an $8,000 yearly limit in 2026 |
| Plan L | 75% of most gaps | Your share, up to a $4,000 yearly limit in 2026 |
Other plans (A, B, D, and M) are also sold, depending on the company. Plans C and F can only be bought by people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. That makes Plan G the most complete plan available to people new to Medicare today.
How Much Does a Medicare Supplement Cost in Oregon?
Honestly? It depends, and anyone quoting you an “average” without your details is guessing. The price of a Supplement depends on:
The plan letter.
Plans with more coverage, like Plan G, generally cost more than plans with more cost-sharing, like Plan N.
The insurance company.
The same plan letter can cost very different amounts from one company to the next.
You.
Your age, where you live, and whether you use tobacco.
The company's rate history.
Some companies raise prices more often than others.

The Downsides of Medigap
Supplements are great for predictable costs, but they’re not perfect:
- ! Higher monthly premiums. You pay a Supplement premium on top of your Part B premium, plus a separate Part D premium.
- ! No drug coverage. You’ll need a separate Part D plan.
- ! No extras. Supplements don’t add dental, vision, or hearing benefits.
- ! Health questions later. Outside your one-time enrollment window and certain protected situations, insurers can ask about your health and turn you down.
- ! Prices can rise. Your premium can go up over time.
Can You Buy a Medicare Supplement Anytime?
You can apply anytime, but you’re only guaranteed approval at certain times.
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period
Under federal law, you get a one-time, 6-month window. It starts the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older. During this window, an insurance company can’t refuse to sell you any policy it offers, can’t charge you more because of health problems, and can’t use medical underwriting to decide whether to accept you.
After that window
An insurance company can ask health questions, charge you more, or turn you down. There are exceptions, called guaranteed issue rights. For example, if your Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare, you get a window to buy certain Supplement plans without health questions.
Still working at 65? Your Medigap window starts when you sign up for Part B, even if you still have employer coverage. Here’s more in our Turning 65 in Oregon checklist.
Oregon's Birthday Rule
Here’s an Oregon perk. If you already have a Medicare Supplement, you can switch to a different one with the same or fewer benefits, starting 30 days before your birthday and ending 30 days after. No health questions.
So if your Plan G premium keeps climbing, your birthday is your chance to shop. Get the details on Oregon’s birthday rule.

Medigap or Medicare Advantage?
With a Supplement, you pay a higher monthly premium for predictable costs and the freedom to see any doctor who takes Medicare. With Medicare Advantage, you often pay a lower premium but use a network and pay copays when you get care. Switching from Medicare Advantage back to a Supplement later isn’t guaranteed, so read Medicare Advantage vs Supplement before you decide.
FAQs
What is the average cost of a Medicare Supplement plan?
There's no single number that fits you. Price depends on the plan letter, the company, your age, where you live, and tobacco use. The fastest way to know is a quote for your details.
What is the most popular Medicare Supplement plan?
For people new to Medicare, Plan G is the most complete plan available, since Plans C and F are closed to anyone who became eligible on or after January 1, 2020. Plan N is a lower-premium option for people comfortable with some copays.
What is the downside to Medigap plans?
Higher monthly premiums, no drug coverage, no dental or vision extras, and you can be turned down for health reasons outside your enrollment window.
Can you buy a Medicare Supplement plan at any time?
You can apply anytime, but approval is only guaranteed during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period or when you have a guaranteed issue right.
Can I switch Medicare Supplement plans in Oregon?
Yes. Oregon's birthday rule lets you switch to a plan with the same or fewer benefits from 30 days before to 30 days after your birthday.
I'm under 65 and on Medicare. Can I buy a Supplement?
Federal law doesn't require insurers to sell Supplements to people under 65, but states can have their own rules. For Oregon's rules, call SHIBA at 800-722-4134.
