How Final Expense Insurance Works
Final expense is a type of whole life insurance with a smaller death benefit. When you die, the money goes to your beneficiary, who can use it for anything: the funeral, medical bills, credit cards, or simply getting by.
The main types:
| Type | Health questions? | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Simplified issue | Yes, a short list. No medical exam | Usually lower price, and full coverage from day one if approved |
| Guaranteed issue | No | Anyone in the eligible age range can get it, but it costs more and usually has a waiting period |
What's a Waiting Period?
Many guaranteed issue policies, and some others, pay a limited benefit if you die from natural causes during the first part of the policy, often the first two years. Usually that means a refund of premiums paid, sometimes plus interest. After the waiting period, the full benefit pays. Accidental death is often covered in full from the start. Always read this part of the policy before you buy.

Is Final Expense Insurance Worth It?
It can be, for the right person.
It may be worth it if you:
- ✓ Want to make sure your family isn’t stuck with funeral costs
- ✓ Have health issues that make regular life insurance hard to get
- ✓ Don’t have savings set aside for final costs
- ✓ Want coverage that lasts for life
It may not be worth it if you:
- ! Already have enough savings to cover final costs
- ! Are healthy enough to qualify for cheaper term or whole life coverage
- ! Would end up paying in more over the years than the policy pays out

What Does Final Expense Insurance Cost?
